Terms and Conditions
Version 1.1 | Effective date: 4 October 2026
1. About ArielEd and these Terms
ArielEd ("ArielEd", "we", "us", "our") is an AI-assisted essay marking platform for GCSE and A-Level English, operated by Ariel Education Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17141109), with a registered office at 32 Highclere Street, London, SE26 4EU.
These Terms govern your use of arieled.com and the ArielEd mobile application. By creating an account or using ArielEd, you agree to these Terms. If you are a school or Multi-Academy Trust, your use is also governed by a separate Service Agreement and Data Processing Agreement.
2. Account eligibility
You must be 13 or over to create an account independently. Users under 13 require verified parental or guardian consent. By accepting these Terms on behalf of a school or organisation, you confirm you have authority to bind that organisation.
If you are a consumer (not purchasing on behalf of a business), nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
3. What ArielEd provides
ArielEd provides AI-assisted marking and feedback for GCSE and A-Level English essays, per-student results, whole-class diagnostic reports, progress tracking tools, and a student-facing AI tutor. The platform is designed as a teaching and feedback tool — see Section 7 for the AI accuracy disclaimer.
4. Schools' responsibilities
The school is the data controller for all student data uploaded to the platform. Before uploading student data, the school must have a signed Data Processing Agreement in place with ArielEd, ensure its own privacy notice describes the use of ArielEd, and ensure parental consent is in place for students under 13.
5. Acceptable use
You may use ArielEd only for lawful educational purposes. You must not:
- Upload entirely AI-generated work as a student's own for purposes of academic fraud
- Attempt to extract, scrape, or systematically download data from the platform
- Attempt to reverse-engineer or interfere with the AI marking models
- Upload offensive, unlawful, or harassing content
- Use the platform to process data for which you have no lawful basis
- Circumvent any access controls or security measures
- Use another person's login credentials without their permission
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts found to be in breach of this section.
6. Intellectual property
You retain all intellectual property rights in essay content you upload. By uploading content, you grant ArielEd a limited licence to process and store it solely to provide the service. We will never use student essays to train AI models or for any commercial purpose beyond marking.
7. AI marking — accuracy, limitations, and disclaimer
ArielEd's marking is AI-generated and is an assistive tool, not a substitute for professional teacher judgement.
Our marking system has been calibrated against AQA and Edexcel mark schemes. Calibration data shows typical accuracy within ±2–3 marks, but individual essays may fall outside this range. Examination board mark schemes change; there may be a lag following specification updates. AI marks have no formal standing with any examination board or OFQUAL and must not be communicated to students or parents as official grades without appropriate teacher review.
Teachers remain professionally responsible for the feedback communicated to students.
8. Subscriptions, pricing, and payment
Plans are invoiced. Payment is by bank transfer against our invoice, within the payment terms stated on it; we do not take card payments. A plan is activated once its invoice is paid. Monthly plans are invoiced monthly and annual plans are invoiced yearly; we will send a reminder at least 7 days before a renewal invoice is due. We will give at least 30 days' written notice of any price increase.
14-day cooling-off period: individual consumers who have not used any paid marking credits may cancel within 14 days of purchase for a full refund under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
9. Fair usage
Marking is measured in credits. One credit is one marked answer: a whole paper uses one credit for each question or section that is marked. Marking an AQA English Language Question 1 answer is free and does not use a credit.
- Teacher plans include a fair-usage allowance of 120 marked answers per teacher per month (about four classes of 30). There is no hard cap: marking is never switched off. If a teacher regularly goes well beyond fair usage we will contact them to discuss a department plan.
- Department plans share a yearly pool of marked answers across the department's teacher seats, as set out on the pricing page or in your order.
We may contact users whose usage is consistently heavy to discuss a plan that better fits their needs.
10. Suspension and termination
You may close your account at any time by emailing [email protected]. We may suspend or terminate accounts that seriously breach these Terms. If we wind down the platform, we will give 90 days' written notice and provide a data export to schools.
11. Limitation of liability
Nothing in these Terms excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud, or any liability that cannot be excluded under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Subject to the above, our total liability to individual users shall not exceed the greater of fees paid in the 12 months preceding the claim or £100. For schools and businesses, indirect loss, loss of profits, and loss of data are excluded; total liability is capped at fees paid in the preceding 12 months. We are not liable for loss arising from reliance on AI marks that have not been reviewed by a qualified teacher.
12. Third-party services
ArielEd integrates with Anthropic (AI), Supabase (database), Vercel (hosting), and Resend (email). These services have their own terms and privacy policies. See our Privacy Policy for details of how student data is protected, including our three-layer anonymisation system that ensures no student names are ever sent to our AI provider.
13. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Consumers in Scotland or Northern Ireland may bring proceedings in their local courts.
14. Changes to these terms
We will notify registered users by email at least 14 days before material changes take effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
